SWR, the public broadcaster serving southwest Germany, has implemented interactive, personalized streaming in its radio apps

The apps of the Südwestrundfunk SWR1SWR3SWR4 and DASDING use the Ybrid platform and aixtream software. The combination allows consumers to stream the live audio directly to their phones and repeat favorite songs on demand, rewind the program, swap songs, or save them to a playlist.

The Ybrid platform, developed by nacamar GmbH, allows the distribution of dynamic and hybrid audio-over-IP content. In addition to the features already available with a previous platform — AddRadio — consumers can swap audio with alternative content in realtime. Other features include time-shifting the live signal and full integration into the aixtream software, allowing precise metadata matching.

Nacamar GmbH certified aixtream, a scalable software developed by Ferncast GmbH, as the best platform for Ybrid streaming.

Gerd Schwager, Deputy Head of Program Distribution at SWR, said, “The SWR chose to procure aixtream encoders by Ferncast because they are an optimal fit for our requirements.”

“Ferncast is a partner of the first hour for Ybrid-compatible and professional live audio setups,” commented Sebastian A. Weiß, nacamar’s managing director and CTO. “The required level of precision and quality, especially concerning metadata and audio, are very high in this field. With aixtream, it is effortless to configure a PIPE for the assimilation of the audio signal into our service.”
