Industry Insider — Wheatstone looks inside IP audio management

Wheatstone, Industry Insider, IP audio

Once upon a time getting just a single channel connection between two broadcast facilities required a laborious effort that involved the phone company, building landlords/engineers and several weeks of nerve-racking waiting for approvals and appointments… only to suffer frustration that it never seemed to work the first time despite the insistence of the phone company that it worked fine on their end…

Ah, the good old days.

Technology to the rescue! IP audio is a true God-send. People who only know IP audio and its magical ability to whip up a (reliable) connection, nee, half-a-dozen, even a hundred connections in an instant (all without phone company involvement!) don’t know how good they have it.

But it’s not all free margaritas at the cabana… IP audio does require some knowledge and the proper equipment.

Which brings Industry Insider to a recent posting by Wheatstone, “What You Need to Know About Ethernet Switches.”

“Ethernet switches aren’t exactly made for audio. And yet, they are the backbone of the IP audio networked facility. They have the power to make or break, literally, your broadcast operation. Here are a few things we’ve learned over the years in working with switches.”

It’s a powerful world of audio network building and control, all available to anyone.

For those involved in broadcast networking or needing to get involved with it, it will be worth the time investment.
