Ferncast has announced a collaboration with German public broadcaster Hessische Rundfunk (HR). The broadcaster first integrated Ferncast’s aixtream software into its radio workflows in 2020 across its six radio stations, regional variants and event programs.

Since 2021 HR has been working with Ferncast to expand its aixtream service with additional DVB, MPEG TS and RDS features. The service includes the creation of DVB multiplexes for all its programs using the same systems the broadcaster uses for internet radio streaming.

Ferncast claims that this provides a number of new opportunities, including the option to perform all internet streaming (Icecast and HLS) and DVB multiplexing on the minimum number of individual systems. This reduces costs, simplifies logistics and management, as provides as an easy transfer of skills for operators.

DVB multiplexing

Ferncast says that DVB multiplexing would ordinarily require multiple encoder devices; it also gives HR the ability to reuse the same signal for more outputs, and provides a straightforward and secure backup setup.

New options for DVB MPEG TS handling (including the handling of Ancillary Data, PIDs, UECP/RDS, etc.) were implemented, which HR explains has enabled the broadcaster to make all its radio programs available 24/7 as DVB mux using aixtream software. All programs are available in multiple formats and quality levels, using a TS format fitting HR’s parameters.

Ferncast adds that it also implemented a customizable DVB and MPEG TS workflow, which can be configured according to a variety of systems when it comes to the exact makeup of the mux and handling of programs. The company claims it benefits customers who require broad compatibility and interoperability with solutions from other suppliers.

HR is now preparing to move its DVB encoding to separate systems within the same infrastructure.
