Global Radio Guide Goes Red

China is the cover story, with good reason

The 17th edition of the Global Radio Guide Winter 202122 is out, and the cover story is the People’s Republic of China, with good reason. The country is embarking on an aggressive outreach program to shape local and global perceptions, and the country’s huge radio broadcast services are key players. Since these services are government-sponsored, listeners hear China’s Communist Party’s perspective of worldwide events as they unfold. Topping the list of the country’s media outlets is China Radio International the largest and most widely heard station in China.

In the latest issue of this guide to global radio, author Gayle van Horn has all the details you need to monitor all the radio services from the Land of the Red Dragon.

Her feature is a comprehensive article on the Chinese radio broadcast system. It features complete schedules for all China radio services and a section on how to identify national stations broadcasting in Chinese.

Further afield, tensions worldwide are encouraging a growing uptake of an old faithful: shortwave radio. People around the world are once again turning to shortwave radio to place themselves on the front lines. GRG17 tells you how to tune in to shortwave broadcast stations from hotspots such as Cuba, India, Iran, North/South Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong. If you have a shortwave radio receiver, SDR or Internet connection, you can pair it with GRG17 to know when and where to listen to the world.

GRG17 carries on the tradition of those before it with an in-depth, 24-hour station/frequency guide with schedules for selected AM band, longwave and shortwave radio stations, and includes listings of DX radio programs and Internet website addresses for many of the stations in the book. There are also entries for time and frequency stations as well as some of the more “intriguing” transmissions one can find on the shortwave radio bands.

If you’re a radio hobbyist, GRG17 is a must – her now-famous SDR Buyer’s Guide is just in time for Christmas  but if you’re in the broader radio industry it’s a detailed reminder of just how wonderfully textured the industry is.
