Digital Radio Mondiale ran a series of new trials to show the benefits of the digital radio standard.
Following July’s event in New Delhi and ahead of its hybrid and in-person events around IBC in September, the new tests took place on Aug. 10–11.
The DRM consortium comprises broadcasters, network providers, manufacturers, universities, broadcasting unions and research institutes with the aim of promoting the DRM standard, encouraging adoption at regional, national and international levels.
Recent Tests
The consortium has conducted tests and field trials all over the world since 2004. It reports that results “consistently confirm the DRM system (both the DRM in AM and DRM in VHF/FM variants) performs according to specification and can meet a wide range of requirements in all types of environment.”
For its latest education trials, DRM worked in conjunction with broadcast transmission specialists Encompass Digital Media. During the trials, Encompass ran a set of test transmissions from the Woofferton transmitting station in the United Kingdom. According to DRM, the target area of the test transmission was predominantly Germany, but stretched to other parts of western and central Europe.
The trials took place as follows:
Wednesday Aug. 10: 6:30–7 a.m. UTC (7:30–8 a.m. BST; 8:30–9 a.m. CEST) 6195 kHz
Thursday Aug. 11: 830–9 a.m. UTC (9:30–10 a.m. BST; 10:30–11 a.m. CEST) 9410 kHz
Users of the Starwaves DRM Softradio App required the latest version 1.3.2.
