Dielectric key to Bonneville Salt Lake City build-out

United States radio station group owner Bonneville International selected Dielectric for a major project at the Farnsworth Peak site near Salt Lake City, Utah. It is the home of much of Salt Lake City’s radio and TV transmitters.

Dielectric was called on to deliver a new master antenna along with a custom combiner that is home to 13 radio stations, three of them Bonneville stations.

Bonneville International Regional Director of Engineering Aaron Farnham explained, “We were looking at a master antenna that was 40 years old. It was never designed for digital and we knew we were pushing the edge of what it could reliably handle. We decided it was time to replace it with something that could support every station on the system and improve overall efficiency.”

The Bonneville engineering team settled on Dielectric’s RingMaster broadband FM antennas.

The results, according to Farnham, “The HD Radio signals are exceptional. In areas where analog traditionally drops out due to terrain, HD Radio now remains solid… Overall, broadcast audio quality has improved across the board.”

The combiner required Dielectric’s engineering team to handle 13 stations without expanding the building’s footprint. Farnham said, “They stacked the combiners and designed everything to minimize how much space it took inside the building.”
