Canford announces passing of Iain Elliott

John Francis, Chairman of United Kingdom-based pro AV products manufacturer and supplier Canford, has released a statement on the passing of the company’s founder and CEO, Iain Elliott.

In a statement to industry leaders, suppliers and customers, for whom Elliott was a significant force, Francis explained that Elliott passed away on 29 December at his home in Longhorsley, Northumberland, in England.

Elliott started the company in 1976 with the idea of an audio “one-stop shop” providing all the necessary equipment on any audiophile’s shopping list. Canford Audio was born, with Francis taking on the role of accountant. Growth was quick, but according to Francis, Elliott remained hands-on at all times, “He knew everybody. His management style was to go round talking to people. His knowledge of products was unrivaled in the industry and he maintained excellent relations with key customers and suppliers.”

As the company grew, the product range continually expanded. Canford now sells over 15,000 items — including its own product range it manufactures in-house — aimed at those who use or install professional audio, video and broadcast equipment. It also distributes worldwide.

In 2019, Elliott and Francis decided to step away from the day-to-day running of the business and sold it to an employee ownership trust. “We did not want to sell the business to another company since we were afraid of losing all that makes Canford unique,” said Francis. “The business is now owned and managed for the benefit of present and future employees.”
