Amazon to Acquire Podcast Publisher Wondery

Amazon has announced that Wondery has signed an agreement to join Amazon Music. The deal has yet to close, and will be subject to customary closing conditions, but Amazon assures listeners that accessibility to the podcasts will not change. Wondery podcasts will still be available through a variety of providers.

Wondery was launched in 2016 and prides itself on its immersive podcasts. It has produced entertaining and educational podcasts, such as “Dirty John,” “Dr. Death,” “American History Tellers,” “Business Wars,” “Gladiator” and “The Shrink Next Door.”

Amazon praised Wondery for its success in “evolving this entertainment medium into a truly new and exciting experience.” With the acquisition, “Wondery will be able to provide even more high-quality, innovative content and continue their mission of bringing a world of entertainment and knowledge to their audiences, wherever they listen.”

Amazon is new to the podcasting arena. It added podcasts to its Amazon Music offerings in Sept. 2020.

“Together with Wondery, we hope to accelerate the growth and evolution of podcasts by bringing creators, hosts and immersive experiences to even more listeners across the globe, just as we do with music,” says a press release from Amazon. “This is a pivotal moment to expand the Amazon Music offering beyond music as listener habits evolve.”
