IP codec developer Vortex Communications has announced that its CallMe IP soft audio codec can now operate on Rode’s RodeCaster Pro-II and Duo portable audio mixers effectively creating a mixer with a built-in audio codec allowing for audio contribution from off-location guests, contributors or piped-in audio sources and prospective audio delivery of audio programming to off-location recipients such as a broadcast studio.
The announcement explains that CallMe-RC “provides a cost-effective one-box solution for outside broadcast, podcasting and web streaming with cabled, Wi-Fi and mobile internet connectivity. It has the same straightforward operation of the CallMe-T hardware codec, providing 20 kHz low-delay Opus audio and compatibility with most manufacturers’ codecs that support the same standards.”
For outside broadcasts, users can connect their upgraded RØDECaster to a cabled, Wi-Fi, or mobile internet connection, touch one of the on-screen quick-dial buttons (or enter the remote destination details using the on-screen keyboard) and connect live to their SIP-compatible Opus studio codec. The upgrade also supports G.722 and G.711 audio encoding.
For podcasting, users send a CallMe link to a guest contributor, who needs only a web browser on a smartphone, tablet or desktop computer. The contributor clicks on the CallMe button to connect live to the upgraded RØDECaster with 20kHz broadcast-quality audio.
Vortex says it will soon provide live streaming capability to an upgraded RØDECaster supporting Shoutcast or Icecast to connect to a web streaming service. Users will only need to touch a pre-configured quick-dial button (or enter the remote URL) to connect live to their internet radio streaming provider.
