Triton releases Canadian podcast numbers

Dateline NBC, podcast

Following hot on the heels of the third quarter U.S. podcast audience numbers, Triton Digital has now released the Canadian podcast ranker for the period July 31–Sept. 3.

Probably not surprisingly there is a distinct similarity with many of the same podcasts, producers and distributors (or their Canadian representatives).

Another similarity is that news/current events and crime podcasts rule. Comedy is also a player in Canada.

Again, like the U.S., top producers include SiriusXM Podcast Network and Wondery Network but in Canada the public broadcaster CBC/Radio Canada pushes out the U.S. public broadcaster National Public Radio. But don’t cry for NPR, they still have a hefty audience north of the border.

At the risk of being repetitive, the top distributor, like the U.S., is SXM Media (i.e. SiriusXM). The next two provide a little variety: CBC/Radio Canada and the international ad sales behemoth DAX Global (which handles NPR in Canada).

The chief difference in Canada is that there is a French-language market and podcasts to fit into it. The Triton ranker lists the top French-language podcasts as “Sexe Oral,” Radio Canada’s “Le Radiojournal” and “Les chroniques de Pierre-Yves McSween” following.

Overall “Dateline NBC” is the leader in Great White North podcasts with the comedy “SmartLess” placing and the CBC’s “Front Burner” showing.
