Sennheiser brings Dolby Atmos to smart cars

Sennheiser, Dolby Atmos, automobile, car

Sennheiser has announced that two cars from car manufacturer smart, the #5 Premium and #5 Brabus, will be Dolby Atmos-capable via the onboard Sennheiser Signature Sound System. But there is a catch, the content needs to come from an Amazon Music Unlimited account.

The cars feature 20 installed speakers so the music should get quite a ride.

Sennheiser Mobility Managing Director Dr. Veronique Larcher said, “Bringing Dolby Atmos through Amazon Music to the smart #5 showcases what is possible when automotive, audio, and technology leaders collaborate with a shared vision for immersive sound.”

Much of the Sennheiser sound system is software-driven leaving it open to future upgrades that do not require hardware replacement or tweaks. The Dolby Atmos addition was one such “painless” software-driven upgrade.

The release added, “During development, Sennheiser’s tuning engineers relied on their immersive studio in Zürich as a reference environment, ensuring that the in-car system reproduces music in Dolby Atmos exactly as intended by its creators. This studio-grade benchmark allowed the Sennheiser team to translate the precision and emotional impact of immersive audio into the cabin of the all-electric smart #5.
