Edison Share of Ear smiles upon audiobooks’ continued rise

Edison Research, Share of Ear, audiobooks, United States

Another nosh at the Edison Research Share of Ear report, this time audiobooks.

A recent press release noted, “Back in 2016, 3% of Americans 13+ spent any of their daily audio time with audiobooks. As of 2025, that reach number grew to 8% of the American 13+ population. This accounts for a 167% increase in people listening to audiobooks.”

Considering that’s a nine-year run, the numbers may not initially seem that great in view of the meteoric rise, and fall, of many new information and entertainment technologies in the last few decades. Thus, it’s precisely because of that continued rise in the face of the cornucopia of media and entertainment options consumers have at their fingertips that makes the number noteworthy.

The report also said that 51% of Americans 18 years old or older had listened to an audiobook.

Edison Research has been partnering with the Audio Publishers Association for these annual surveys.
