On the occasion of BRF’s 80th anniversary, Belgium’s King Philippe and Queen Mathilde visited the German-language public broadcaster in Eupen.

It was a fitting anniversary gift when, on Sept. 30, the royal couple arrived at the BRF (Belgischer Rundfunk) broadcast headquarters. After a stop at the television studios, the King and Queen went live on air in the “Brasserie” radio show on BRF 1.

They also took time to meet BRF staff in their working environment, guided by BRF Director Alain Kniebs. During the program, host Lena Orban welcomed the royal guests, and King Philippe spoke directly to listeners. “This is probably the first time the King has gone live on radio,” said Kniebs.

The studio visit was followed by a tour of the newsroom and Phonotek, the station’s former vinyl library, which now serves as its music scheduling room.

On Wednesday, Oct. 1, it was precisely 80 years since the first German-language program aired from the public broadcaster’s studio in Brussels. A special festive live broadcast commemorated the jubilee.
