The BBC has celebrated more than 300 unsung heroes across its 40 local and national stations through the 2025 “Make a Difference Awards,” an initiative launched during the pandemic to recognize acts of kindness, solidarity and resilience in United Kingdom communities.
The awards took place throughout September across the U.K., spotlighting volunteers, community leaders and citizens whose work has had a lasting local impact. The BBC says the initiative highlights the strength of community engagement across its network, including BBC Radio Scotland, BBC Radio Wales, BBC Radio Cymru, BBC Radio Ulster/Foyle, BBC Radio nan Gàidheal and the 39 local stations in England.
For the first time, an “Animal” category honored 20 animals — from rescue dogs and birds of prey to a turtle — recognized for their support and assistance roles.
Planting and sniffing
Among the recipients, BBC Radio York awarded Janet Willoner the “Green Award” for planting and donating more than 4,000 trees. Shani Stephens was recognized by BBC Radio Wales and BBC Radio Cymru for tackling food insecurity through the Ty Fforest Resource Hub.
In Scotland, Pauline Moriarty received the Fundraiser Award from BBC Radio Scotland for her work supporting young people at risk of suicide through her charity, Beautiful Inside and Out. In Northern Ireland, the Support2Gether collective, founded by two mothers who experienced postnatal depression, was honored for helping parents in need. In the Lake District, rescue dog Morag received a special award for her life-saving work in locating stranded hikers.
Radio as a catalyst for compassion
Chris Burns, controller of local audio commissioning at the BBC, said the awards embody the broadcaster’s mission to serve its communities. “The ‘Make a Difference Awards’ are a powerful reminder of the compassion and generosity present in every part of the U.K. These stories of dedication and mutual support are deeply inspiring, and we’re proud to celebrate those who change the lives of others,” she said.
Launched in 2021 at the height of the pandemic, the Make a Difference Awards have become a symbol of how BBC Local Radio promotes collective action and empathy. They also underscore that, even in a digital age, radio remains a medium of connection, emotion and proximity.
